Guy at the hangar in Wichita told me my safety wire looked like a bird nest and he was not wrong
I had been twisting safety wire by hand for about 6 months on regional turboprops out of Wichita, thinking I was saving time versus the pliers. An old A&P named Dale watched me do a fuel pump lock and just said, 'that looks like a bird nest, son.' I swallowed my pride and switched back to the twister, and my last three inspections passed with zero gripes. Anyone else have a guy like that who called out your shortcut in the nicest possible way?
What did Dale actually point at when he said bird nest, the pigtail or the twists themselves? I ask because hand twisting can look fine at a glance but the tail is where it goes wrong. How much tail did you leave on that fuel pump lock, and did he make you redo the whole thing or just the finish?
