The $600 car repair that changed how I handle surprise bills
Two years ago, my alternator died in a Target parking lot. I used to just put stuff like that on a credit card and panic later. Now, I keep a separate savings account at my credit union called 'Car Stuff' and put $75 in it every payday. When my brakes needed work last month, I had the cash ready. How do you guys build a buffer for the random stuff that always breaks?

My credit union lets me set up sub-accounts for free. I have one for car stuff, another for vet bills, and a third for home repairs. It forces me to split my savings so I don't accidentally spend the tire money on a new dishwasher. Seeing those separate balances makes it real.

Read a good article about calling this a "Freedom Fund" instead of an emergency fund. The name change made it feel less like a punishment for bad luck and more like paying for future peace of mind. I do something similar with envelopes of cash for different goals. Physically moving the money makes the choice to save feel more solid than just moving numbers on a screen. It stops me from lying to myself about what the money is really for.
