My dad's advice about 'just be yourself' at job interviews was actually terrible advice

I tried it at a interview for a warehouse supervisor gig in Phoenix last month, and I talked about my love for collecting rare coins and the guy looked at me like I had three heads. Has anyone else found that their parent's well-meaning advice backfired in a specific situation?

Used to hate this take but honestly daniel857 changed my whole view on it.

$50 says daniel857 is right. Tbh, you can't just drop "I collect rare coins" halfway through a warehouse supervisor interview and expect them to see it as a strength. They're trying to figure out if you can run a shift, handle inventory, and not scare off the crew. @daniel857 nailed it with the "polished version" thing. Next time, try saying something like "I'm good at organizing things down to the smallest detail" instead of mentioning your actual hobby. Saves everyone the awkward silence.

Hang on, let's not overthink this. Your dad was probably just trying to say "don't lie" not "tell them about your weird coin hobby." Job interviews are basically just acting. Everyone knows you're supposed to be a slightly polished version of yourself, not the raw unfiltered edition that talks about rare coins. It's not that serious.
