My aunt told me to always get the extra insurance on rental cars

I ignored her for years to save the $25 a day, but last month in Denver I got a chip in the windshield from highway gravel. The repair bill was $400, which the basic coverage didn't touch. Anyone else have a piece of advice they wish they'd taken sooner?

Oh man, that's rough! Just a heads up though, that extra insurance is usually per rental, not per day. So it might be like $25 total, which makes it way easier to swallow!

Have you checked if your credit card already covers rental insurance?

Yikes, that's a brutal lesson. Derek670 is right about the per rental cost, which helps. But honestly, the real kicker people miss is the time and hassle. Even if your credit card covers it, you're stuck dealing with their claims process and paperwork while the rental company charges your card immediately. That $25 buys you walking away from the counter and forgetting it ever happened, which is worth way more than the cash.
