Why I finally gave up on swamp coolers after 9 summers in Rio Rancho

I swore by my swamp cooler for years, but last June the monsoon humidity hit and my house sat at 84 degrees for four straight days while I messed with pads and a leaky pump. I finally caved and got a quote for a real AC unit, and the tech showed me my roof was soaked and the vent was clogged with 9 years of dust and hard water scale.
