Swamp cooler vs refrigerated air in my NE Heights house, and I am never going back
So I live in a 1950s place near Montgomery and Wyoming. Had a swamp cooler on the roof for years. It worked okay until about mid June, then it just blew warm wet air and my electric bill still hit $180. Two summers back the thing finally died on a 103 degree day and I had to decide fast. Got three quotes for refrigerated air and went with the middle one at $6,400 installed. First bill after was $210 but the house actually stayed at 74 all day. Here is the part nobody tells you, my swamp cooler was rusting out the roof vent and I had a leak I never noticed until the install guys pulled it. So I guess my question is, for folks who kept the swamp cooler, how are you handling the July stretch? Do you run it at night and close up during the day or what? I want to know if I jumped too soon.
