My brother-in-law told me to check my swamp cooler pads before summer, and he was totally right.
He said it after Easter dinner, and I put it off for weeks. Went up there yesterday and the pads were basically dust, full of leaves and packed dirt. The unit was struggling to pull any air at all. I spent $40 on new pads and an hour cleaning, but now it runs like new. Anyone else have a family member who gives surprisingly good home advice?

Full of leaves and packed dirt" is exactly what happened to mine last year. My dad always said to check them when the cottonwood trees stop shedding. It's one of those chores that feels pointless until you see the difference it makes.

Yeah cottonwoods are the worst for those things, they just dump that fluffy stuff everywhere and it turns into this weird soggy mess inside the cooler. My neighbor didn't clean his for like three summers and when he finally opened it up there was basically a little garden growing in there with actual roots and everything.

That "feels pointless until you see the difference" part is so true. I wonder how many people are just running their AC harder to make up for a clogged swamp cooler, wasting a ton of money on power bills for no reason. It's the kind of small fix that actually has a big hidden cost if you ignore it.
