Rant: Fountains show what these malls once were

I seek them out on every trip. The cracked tiles and dry pools remind me of busy weekends. It's a clear picture of how much has changed.

My buddy Alan actually PROPOSED by the big fountain at the old Southgate mall. He had his little sister hide the ring box behind one of those fake rocks in the water. Took him twenty minutes to fish it out with his keys because he was so nervous, and the water was all grimy. That whole wing is a Spirit Halloween now.

My cousin got her first job at that Southgate food court in 2005. She said the fountain filter broke for good that summer, so the water just kept getting that cloudy green tint. That grime was basically a decade of pennies and mall dust settling in.
